Cablecos looking to Bell ExpressVu for exclusive delivery of diginet signals

The unavailability of some digital specialty channel signals such as CourtTV Canada via Canadian Satellite Communications Inc. (Cancom) is edging some cable operators to turn to Bell ExpressVu LP for satellite delivery to their headends. A more reasonably priced Tandberg receiver/descrambler capable of providing the ExpressVu-supplied digital signals to CherryPickers and Motorola Headend in the Sky (HITS) equipment is also making it easier for cablecos to go with the BCE Inc.-owned satellite relay distribution undertaking (SRDU).

CNM Update

I.C.E. rehires half of its game developers
I.C.E. Multimédia has reportedly rehired half of the 30 game developers it laid off last January (CNM, Jan. 23/02). Lesaffaires.com reports that the staff returned to work on Friday, July 12 and will begin working on a second edition of the company’s Land of the Magic Stones edu-tainment game. The title is expected to be released in November. There is no word on whether the game will be released in any format except CD-ROM, but I.C.E.’s stated intent in restructuring its development staff was to examine creating titles for platforms such as game consoles. In May, company spokesperson Ron Vaillancourt told CNM that the company would definitely be developing for non-PC platforms. Further details are expected soon (CNM, May 31/02). More details.

Unique Broadband acquires assets from SierraCom
Unique Broadband Systems Inc. has acquired point-to-point radio communications assets from Massachusetts-based SierraCom, a company that was involved in microwave telecommunications systems. The assets include intellectual property, test equipment, and other inventory. UBS will take over manufacturing of the product and will continue to develop the system into a 3G compliant backhaul IP radio product.
"This newly acquired product line is an excellent addition to our wireless product portfolio as it is used by various OEMs for their cellular network rollouts," UBS chair and CEO Gerald McGoey said in a news release.
