Star Choice files licence amendment on out-of-market television signals

Faced with a slew of recent requests by broadcasters for signal deletion, satellite TV operator Star Choice Television Network Inc. has filed a licence amendment with the CRTC that would allow it to distribute out-of-market television signals without having to perform simultaneous substitution – Broadcasting Public Notice 2002-71. In its application made public November 19, Star Choice agrees to all of the concessions made by satellite TV competitor Bell ExpressVu LP in a proposed agreement with the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) currently under consideration by the commission, with one major exception (CCR, Oct. 10/02).

CRTC pulls Telus’ BDU applications from hearing as it seeks clarification of concerns

Telus Communications Inc.’s applications for two regional broadcast distribution licences were pulled from a public hearing held this week as the CRTC seeks more information about an issue raised by interveners in the process. Sources at the CRTC would not reveal precisely what aspect prompted delaying hearing the applications, indicating only that more time was needed for further examination. Speculation is that the CRTC wants to examine in more detail the effect of carriage of the out-of-market signals that Telus is proposing.

Italians and Brits oppose EU assistance for telecom
The British and Italian governments have agreed to form an alliance that would fight any move by the European Union to prop up the ailing telecom sector. Italy’s telecom minister Maurizio Gasparri is scheduled to meet with Britain’s Stephen Timms to discuss the matter.

Call-Net Enterprises Inc. reported revenues of $198.6 million for the third quarter of 2002, up marginally from the $197.9 million of Q2, but down from 2001’s $223 million. The CLEC announced it has added its 150,000th local service line.
