Change at top signals little change in policy for record label association

There will likely be little shift in the anti-piracy efforts undertaken by the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) as longtime industry executive and lawyer Graham Henderson takes over the helm from outgoing president Brian Robertson. Both Henderson and Robertson share the view that litigation must move ahead at the same time as continued education efforts to halt the precipitous decline in music sales experienced by the industry over the last four years. Both men also say the switch at the top has nothing to do with ongoing efforts to win court cases and influence legislation.

ROW International News Briefs

Industry ready for ZigBee revolution, says WTRS
Demand for low data rate systems is expected to increase dramatically in the future as technologies such as ZigBee and others based on the 802.15.4 protocol hit the market, according to new research from West Technology Research Solutions LLC (WTRS). The research concludes in its report that the wireless communications industry faces a high risk of market fragmentation and that the market will likely be dominated by proprietary systems based on the 802.15.4 standard. WTRS maintains that ZigBee will attain standard status, but its impact in the marketplace will be lower than previously thought because of strategic maneuvres on the part of several companies.

Industry Canada rules on access to analog broadcast spectrum in channels 60-69

Industry Canada has decided to add a mobile allocation to the 746-806 MHz frequency band, a decision that clears the way for wireless carrier access to the valuable bandwidth (DGTP-02-004). The department has also allocated 12 MHz of this spectrum exclusively to public safety, allowing for the introduction of interoperable first responder communications among different jurisdictions and agencies.
