Pattison deserves a chance: Ray del Val

On August 2, the CRTC released Public Notice 2006-97 announcing its decision to licence five new radio stations in the Calgary area, from a pool of 13 applicants. Commissioner Helen Ray del Val was at odds with her colleagues over how many stations the market could support. An excerpted version of her dissenting opinion appears below.

CTV television personality Ben Mulroney has been appointed as a National Ambassador for UNICEF Canada. Mulroney, perhaps best known as the host of the CTV shows Canadian Idol and eTalk, also holds degrees in law and history. One of his first responsibilities in his new role will be to serve as national spokesperson for this year’s revitalized Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign, in which Canadian kids will engage in fundraising and educational activities to help give children in Malawi a chance to go to school.

Toronto-based family entertainment portal Kaboose Inc. recently announced the appointment of Daniel Ambrose to its board of directors. As managing director of Ambro.com, the Eugene OR-based media consulting shop he founded in 1994, Ambrose has provided strategic advice to such firms as about.com, iVillage Inc., Hearst Corp., and Primedia Inc. Before starting his own company, he worked in various advertising sales positions with Ziff Davis, Hearst Magazines, Reed Consumer Publications and the New York Times Co. Much of his career has been spent with childrens and family publications, including Child Magazine – which he helped propel to Adweek Magazine’s "10 Hottest Magazines" list – and Healthy Kids. Kaboose chairman and CEO Jason DeZwirek said of Ambrose in a media release: "He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge in both traditional and online media and will be a valuable asset to our board and our company’s overall strategic planning." Ambrose will also serve on the board’s audit committee.
Ambrose’s arrival comes at a time when another Kaboose director, Quest Capital Corp. managing director Murray Sinclair, is stepping down from the board. At the company’s recent annual general meeting in Toronto, Sinclair deferred from running again for election to the board. A long-serving director of the company, Sinclair’s tenure spans Kaboose’s going public in last year’s reverse-takeover of Iron Springs Capital Corp., as well as the company’s acquisitions of BabyZone.com and TwoPeasInABucket.com.
