Legislation that would force digital giants like Meta Platforms Inc.‘s Facebook and Alphabet Inc.‘s Google to negotiate with, and ultimately pay, Canadian news producers rests on the notion that linking to a site constitutes taking value away from that site, and is a step in the wrong direction – away from the so-called open internet, according to a former director of CBC/Radio-Canada‘s website.
