CBC gets support on consult delay request 

CBC/Radio-Canada has received several letters of support in its attempt to delay a mandated consultation with Indigenous peoples from the 2022-2023 broadcast year until the 2023-2024 broadcast year.

CRTC opens proceeding into 911 and 988 calls from MLTS

Tuesday the CRTC announced it was beginning a proceeding into emergency calls from multi-line telephone systems (MLTS). These networks are mostly used by outlets with multiple telephone lines such as offices, hotels or hospitals and frequently require dialing a prefix to get an outside line.

CBC asked to prove claim of Indigenous ‘consultation fatigue’ by May 29

In a back-and-forth between CBC/Radio-Canada on when the broadcaster should have to launch a consultative process with Indigenous peoples as part of the CBC’s conditions of license, the CRTC is giving the broadcaster until May 29 to get feedback from Indigenous groups.

Public interest groups call for more time on C-11 consults

A coalition of 12 different public sector and public interest groups have written to the CRTC asking for an extension of several deadlines in the regulator’s consultation on the implementation of Bill C-11 – the Online Streaming Act – announced last week.

Ontario telecom files Part 1 over delayed access to Toronto condos

An Ontario-based carrier has filed a Part 1 application with the CRTC after being repeatedly denied access to a building in Toronto. Coextro, operated by 2332683 Ontario Inc., tells the commission that Toronto Standard Condominium Corp. 1782 has been shutting it out for three years and seven months.

Incumbents don’t want IoT, machine-to-machine market segments included in MVNO regime

The commission should not regulate the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine (M2M)  markets in the same manner as retail mobile wireless services, Canada’s incumbent telecommunications companies said in response to a CRTC consultation on whether to include those retail market segments in its mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) access framework.

Parliamentary committee calls for China TV ban

A House of Commons committee is calling for the Minister of Canadian Heritage to ban Chinese state media from Canadian broadcast systems. The committee on Canada-China Relations made the demand in a report issued Thursday.

Broadband use lowers harmful emissions, think tank finds

The Montreal Economic Institute has released a paper finding that adoption of broadband technology can help in the fight against climate change. Senior policy analyst Krystle Wittevrongel, working with MEI president Daniel Dufort, issued the document on Thursday.
