WildBrain Ltd. is accusing BCE Inc. of breaching its regulatory obligations regarding its English-language services Family Channel, Family Jr., and WildBrain TV, and its French-language service Télémagino and as a result has given Corus Entertainment Inc. an unfair advantage.

Lead-lined copper wiring too small part of network to be concern, telecoms say

Incumbent Canadian telecoms say there is no cause for alarm that lead-sheathed copper wiring is deployed in their networks. The amount of copper wire left is very small and is shrinking every day. Health Canada is not concerned about the health effects.

News companies ask Competition Bureau to look at Meta news-blocking

A group of news organizations have filed an application with the Competition Bureau over Meta Platforms Inc.’s decision to block Canadian news feeds from Facebook and Instagram. The Meta move comes in response to the passage of the Online Streaming Act.

OPINION: When the dust settles on the CRTC’s ‘path forward’, will Canada have a better broadcasting system?

On May 12, the CRTC announced the first of a three-step process to implement Bill C-11, the Online Streaming Act, which had entered into force two weeks earlier. The first step consists of a trifecta of CRTC public consultations – consultation notices 2023-138, -139 and -140 – dealing with “the contributions that broadcasting undertakings … will be required to make to support the creation, distribution, promotion and discoverability of Canadian and Indigenous audio and video content”.

Federal and territorial governments invest in NWT fibre link

The governments of Canada and the Northwest Territories have earmarked $19.7 million for a fibre optic line between Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk. This will be the start of high-speed internet service in the latter city.

Money allocation main issue as Streaming Act replies filed to CRTC

Battles over money and how to allocate it are at the forefront as the CRTC receives replies on the implementation of the Online Streaming Act, which was known as Bill C-11 in Parliament. The deadline for replies was late last month.
