Nortel teams with Qualcomm on dual-mode handsets

Nortel Networks Corp. and Qualcomm Inc. have completed a trial demonstrating an uninterrupted voice call when switching from a traditional cellular network to a wireless LAN. The two companies say this is a major step towards delivering out-of-the-box voice call continuity (VCC) when going from one type of wireless network to another. According to a news release, VCC can reduce mobile phone charges by allowing cell phones to operate on Wi-Fo networks. "Airtime and long distance charges do not apply when the user roams into areas of WiFi coverage – which can be in the home, office or some public retail locations," reads the release.

Impact of distant signals on the table at BDU review: CRTC

The CRTC announced last week that it considers issues related to distant signals, also known as time-shifting, to be within the scope of its review of the regulatory frameworks for broadcasting distribution undertakings and discretionary programming services taking place next April. "The commission will therefore accept proposals, comments and evidence regarding the impact of distant signals and the impact of their importation into local markets as part of the proposals and comments on a fee for the distribution of over-the-air television signals to be submitted by 25 January 2008," wrote the CRTC. The commission has also established a revised date of February 22, 2008 for filing reply comments.
