Wireless-only customers growing in US

A new report from In-Stat says that the ranks of wireless-only households continues to grow. As can be expected, the typical profile of a wireless-only customer is a young single person, who is living alone or sharing accommodations. These people are also the least likely to have a landline phone. In-Stat also notes that cord cutters use 22% more mobile minutes than the average wireless users and 40% more than those not willing to cut their landline cord.

Shaftesbury goes to Gillers again for Cancon

Shaftesbury Films has acquired the rights to Elizabeth Hay's Scotiabank Giller Prize-winning novel Late Nights on Air, which they will develop into a television series. "We knew after reading Late Nights on Air, long before the Giller Awards were announced, that this book was a winner," said Christina Jennings, chairman, Shaftesbury Films. "Elizabeth's compelling story, set in a local radio station in the far north, and populated with a rich cast of characters, will provide viewers with a unique television experience." Producer of the popular series ReGenesis, Shaftesbury last year acquired the rights to 2006 Giller winner Bloodletting and Miraculous Cures by Vincent Lam, which is currently being developed into a limited series for the Movie Network and Movie Central.

Ontario Chamber calls for tougher IP protection

Advocates for tougher copyright protection have a new ally. The Ontario Chamber of Commerce released a report December 3 calling on both the provincial and federal governments for more crime-fighting resources, tougher laws and longer jail time to curb internet piracy, trademark counterfeiting and other infringements of intellectual rights. Claiming that Canada "does not have an effective IPR protection strategy", the Chamber questions whether existing laws and mechanisms even meet the basic obligations contained in the World Trade Organization's agreement on trade-related aspects of intellectual property.
