OMDC invests $1.8 million in films in Ontario

The Ontario Media Development Corporation is doling out $1.8 million from its film fund to finance the production of five dramatic Ontario feature films, and seven projects, two of which are documentaries in the late developmental stages.

Barrett stymied by big wireless players in bid to provide national rural broadband service

Barrett Xplore Inc. will now be able to serve an additional two million Canadians living in rural regions after acquiring 3.5 GHz spectrum from Mipps Inc. Extending broadband to even more communities, however, is being hindered by major telecom companies unwilling to share their rural spectrum, the company contends.

Russian software company fueling mobile entertainment uptake

Spb Software, a mobile application developer with operations in Russia, Hong Kong and the US, has unveiled released Spb Online, a tool designed to stimulate subscriber uptake of advanced mobile content services such as mobile TV, online radio and games. The company made the announcement at ITU Telecom Asia today.

More money for northern broadband

The federal government has committed more money to bringing broadband to residents of the Far North, allocating nearly $36.5 million for broadband infrastructure in 56 communities in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories from the National Satellite Initiative. The announcement comes amid speculation that the government will call an election.

CSA gets new president

Astronaut Steve MacLean has been named president of the Canadian Space Agency, taking over from Guy Bujold, who was acting on an interim basis. He comes with solid credentials to lead Canada’s space program. MacLean, one of the first six Canadian astronauts selected in December 1983, was a key contributor on both the Canadarm and the Canadarm2 projects. He has held other positions including chief science advisor for the International Space Station, director general of the Canadian Astronaut Program, as well as positions with NASA.
