AirIQ makes minor change in executive

Donald Gibbs has been named GM of AirIQ’s land business unit. He will also continue in his role as CFO of the company. The announcement comes as the telematics firm cuts a third of its staff, a move that should save AirIQ $1 million annually, but comes with a $850,000 price tag for severance packages.

Heritage minister says regulatory barriers should not impede rollout of OTA digital TV

In what could be his first and last speech to the industry—depending on the outcome of moves for a coalition government next week—Heritage Minister James Moore weighed in on Canada’s transition to digital, urging for an industry-led solution that will see over-the-air (OTA) broadcasters working in partnership with BDUs to ensure a smooth switch without  additional costs being  pushed on consumers.

Sierra Wireless gets stronger

Vancouver-based Sierra Wireless has reached an agreement to acquire rival Wavecom for 218 million euro or about $343 million, a move the two companies say will create "market leader in wireless data, and will be uniquely positioned to benefit from the anticipated growth in wireless data for the mobile computing and M2M markets."

Craig gets mobile WiMAX approval

Craig Wireless Systems Ltd. has won Industry Canada approval for the conversion of its multi-point distribution system (MDS) spectrum in the Vancouver area to Broadband Radio Service (BRS) spectrum. The approval allows Craig Wireless to offer mobile services using WiMAX technology in the Vancouver and lower mainland regions of British Columbia. The company will also continue to provide broadcasting distribution services.

MTS Allstream promotes veteran to head enterprise division

Dean Prevost’s 11-year tenure at  MTS Allstream will be capped off with yet another addition to the roster of senior positions he has held with the company.
