The CRTC “must implement a reasonable test” for fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP) rates to prevent situations where  providers offer prices significantly below approved wholesale rates, according to Quebecor Inc.’s CEO.

CRTC approves new area codes for Toronto and British Columbia

Wednesday the CRTC announced it had allowed new area code overlays for Toronto and for British Columbia. Both areas were forecast to run out of numbers in the next few years.

CRTC sets out MVNO timelines, negotiations to be concluded by Aug. 7

The CRTC has announced that it expects incumbents to have their mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) service “operational and ready for use” no later than June 8, and agreements should be in place with regional providers availing of the service by Aug. 7.

Facebook’s refusal to send witnesses angers Heritage committee

Sir Nicholas Clegg’s reversal of an agreement to appear before the House of Commons Committee on Canadian Heritage upset members of that committee Monday. Clegg, president of global affairs for Meta Platforms Inc., had initially said he would show up to testify about Bill C-18, the Online News Act, but reneged when Meta was upset about the title of the hearing.

Telus Q1 profit down from last year

Telus Corp. reported profits of $224 million for the three months ending March 31, a 45 per cent dip compared to last year’s $404 million due to “higher interest, depreciation and amortization, and restructuring and other costs.”

Ericsson and Eastlink extend 5G deal while Rogers slashes prices

Swedish telecom manufacturer Ericsson AB and Bragg Communications Inc.’s Eastlink division announced Thursday that they had signed a three-year extension to an existing 10-year contract for 5G deployment. The European firm will supply 3500 MHz mid-band radios and enhanced core network support for Eastlink’s 5G network.
