More than 400 million cell phone TV viewers by 2011: IMS
Market research and consulting firm IMS Research forecasts that 446 million people worldwide will be watching TV on their cell phones by the end of 2011. The IMS study also reported that mobile digital TV will experience 50% year-on-year growth through 2010. "Given the right conditions, mobile TV has the potential to spread from one customer to the next like few technologies before it," said Stephen Froelich, one of the authors of the IMS report. "If providers effectively supply compelling content, quality reception, and affordable, attractive phones, then every new mobile TV subscriber can become a mobile TV evangelist." While cellular data networks should experience strong growth in the mobile TV market, they will be overtaken by digital broadcast services as the network of choice for subscribers by early 2010.

Parents both like and dislike cell phones for kids

When Marina McDonnell considered buying her daughter a cell phone, the mother was of two minds about it: on one hand, she liked the idea of Lindsay, 12, being able to call Mom at any time, in case of trouble. But on the other hand, McDonnell didn’t want to spoil the child with a high-tech gift.

Independent producers should be compensated for each platform: CFTPA

In response to the CRTC’s Public Notice 2006-72, which called for comments on technological change and the future of broadcasting in Canada, the Canadian Film and Television Production Association noted a dearth of Canadian content on new digital platforms. Its submission, excerpts from which appear below, calls for more Canadian content on these platforms, as well as increased cooperation between independent producers and television broadcasters.

Alliance numériqc said goodbye to its GM of five years this month. Gilles Bertrand says he stepped down from the position on Sept. 15 after completing several of the goals he set out to accomplish in 2001, including a reorganization of the provincial digital media body and the launch of the Montreal International Game Summit in 2004.
The search for a new GM is now underway, and Bertrand has reportedly presented his choice of candidate to the alliance’s board of directors.
