Bouncing back from the infamous telecom and Internet implosion of about six years ago, investment in the communications industry by Canadian venture capital (VC) companies has shifted its focus away from infrastructure development toward innovative applications developers.

AI-assisted uMind set to replace e-learning software

University of Montreal professor Dr. Claude Frasson recently announced the creation of uMind, a company specializing in the delivery of second-generation e-learning software. uMind’s two platforms, uSim and uLearn, will harness the power of artificial intelligence to estimate, control and anticipate learner behaviour and adjust the learning path to suit the user’s needs. “We have taken dynamic, adaptive learning to levels never experienced in the past,” said Frasson. “Our primary objective is to build technology that understands and responds to the human learning process rather than the other way around.” Through testing and independent studies, uMind platforms have excelled at everything from critical training in the transportation and education to the telecom and public safety and security fields.

BITE TV gets Emmy nod, signs multiple partnerships

Mississauga, ON-based interactive specialty channel BiteTV was recently nominated for an International Emmy in the interactive channel category. If BiteTV , which has only been on the air for 23 months, were to win the award, it would be the first Canadian company to win an Emmy in that category. “While we are still a very young company, it’s great to be internationally recognized,” said BiteTV's president and CEO, Jeffrey Elliott. He adds that this year has been “stellar” for the new company, which also announced a distribution deal with Joost recently. Another agreement was also finalized recently with Amp’d Mobile to provide signature short-form content offerings to the wireless network supplier. “These agreements are significant steps forward, giving BiteTV a foot-hold in the international market,” adds Elliott.

Conventional media urged to change channels at ICE 07

The organization formerly known as the New Media Business Alliance – now Interactive Ontario as of March 21 – presented a two-part session at last week's ICE 07 event seemingly aimed at helping old-media broadcasters embrace the upside of letting go of total control over their content. The first panel in the series, titled "Alternate channels for media delivery content," sought to greatly expand the conventional notion of what constitutes a distribution channel.

Sierra Wireless undeterred by expanding number of municipal Wi-Fi networks

In cities across North America surfing the web and connecting to your data is becoming easier; both in terms of access, and on your pocketbook. By the end of 2006, more than 300 municipal Wi-Fi networks were either deployed, in various stages of deployment or were being planned in the US alone.
