One tariff down, one to go for online music

It is said that a good compromise lies in having both parties complain about the outcome. Mitel creates SIP Microsoft link

Ottawa-based Mitel Networks Corp. has developed direct SIP connection capabiltities between its 3300 IP Communications Platform (ICP) – an IP-PBX – and Microsoft Corp.'s Exchange Server 2007 Unified Messaging. This eliminates the need for a separate SIP gateway to negotiate between the two systems, which spells deeper unified messaging integration: voice, email and faxes should travel seamlessly between the communication application and the message store, for instance.

Broadband power line (BPL): useless or misunderstood?

The shine is supposedly off broadband over powerline (BPL) technology. The tantalizing possibilities it seemed to offer a few years ago for easy Web delivery across that elusive last mile have faded.  Utilities that invested millions in initial attempts to deploy BPL ran into one expensive roadblock after another and soon abandoned it. So should BPL be consigned to the dustbin of history? Perhaps it warrants a second look from a different direction. Instead of asking if BPL is good for broadband delivery, reframe the question. Ask instead: What is BPL good for?

Video conferences grow into ‘green’ scene

Ask Dave Komaromi, technical services manager at Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP in Toronto, why his company distributes desktop video conferencing systems among its lawyers, and he'll talk about productivity improvements and decreased travel costs. But he'll also mention a less common yet increasingly important impetus: the need for green. We're not talking money here; we're talking environmental friendliness.

The last straw for SIP

Is SIP all it's cracked up to be? John Waclawsky, Motorola Inc.'s chief software architect, thinks we ask too much of the protocol – and we're quickly becoming disappointed with its performance. In this article excerpt, courtesy of Business Communications Review magazine, Waclawsky explains why SIP might sink.

When administrators at Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) nearly lost out on a $250,000 donation thanks to a failing phone system, the Nampa ID-based  based school knew it was time for some new communication equipment. But that was only the beginning.

The wireless sector continues to capture a large share of venture capital (VC) funds in Canada, but over the past few years VC firms have changed their investment strategies. According to two of the country's major VC companies, firms developing applications and services are now garnering the lion's share of investment.
