Ask.com wants to be least intrusive search engine

Internet search engine Ask.com is now empowering people to prevent their search requests from being deposited in data banks in a bid to become less intrusive than its competitors. Unveiled yesterday, AskEraser purges a user's search requests from Ask.com's computers within a few hours. Comparitavely, Google Inc. and Microsoft's search engine store personal information fro 18 months, and AOL and Yahoo Inc. retain requests for 13 months. "We definitely want to stand out from the other guys," said Doug Leeds, Ask.com's senior vice-president of product management. "This level of control is unprecedented and unmatched." Ask is the fifth-largest US search engine with a  3% market share.

Record producer exec confident copyright bill will be tabled before holidays

The head of the Canadian Independent Record Production Association is confident the much-anticipated amendments to the Canadian Copyright Act will be tabled in the House of Commons this week. While news outlets reported yesterday that Industry Minister Jim Prentice will now delay tabling the bill until 2008, CIRPA president and executive director Duncan McKie calls this "wishful thinking" from those who oppose copyright reform.

Nortel pushing its carrier Ethernet solution

Nortel Networks Corp. announced today a number of developments with its Provider Backbone Transport (PBT) carrier Ethernet solution. In addition to announcing that three new carriers have opted to implement Nortel's PBT system, the Toronto-based telecommunications equipment maker added new capabilities to PBT and added new members to its carrier Ethernet ecosystem. Switzerland's group-e, Highland Telephone Cooperative of Tennessee and the Gulf Coast's Southern Light are the latest carriers to jump on Nortel's PBT bandwagon.

COM DEV US appoints new president

Dan White has been named president of COM DEV International Ltd.'s US operations with the primary responsibility to establish establishing a source in the area of the company's core competency and to oversee the construction of COM DEV's Los Angeles manufacturing facility. White joined COM DEV USA earlier this year with more than 20 years of experience in the satellite industry. Prior to joining COM DEV, he was VP of engineering at Datapath, a Duluth GA firm, where he played a key role in doubling the size of the technical staff and adding critical design and analytical skills to the organization. Previously, he spent 16 years at Hughes Space and Communications, which was acquired by Boeing in 2000.

Mobile boarding passes come to Canada

Air Canada and Lipso Inc.'s national launch  this month of a commercial mobile barcode check-in service has put Canada ahead of many countries in embracing this latest technology. The move comes after a four-month trial the two companies undertook in Montreal in conjunction with the Aéroports de Montreal and the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority.

MTS Allstream still analyzing auction strategies

MTS Allstream Inc. isn't tipping its hand regarding potential auction strategies, despite rules that explicitly allow for the entry of new national wireless competitors. Industry Canada set aside 40 MHz of spectrum for new entrants and mandated roaming and tower sharing in its auction framework released on November 28.

TSN appoints marketing VP

Shawn Redmond has been named VP, marketing at TSN, effective immediately. In his new position Redmond will oversee the overall consumer marketing strategy for TSN as well as digital sports networks NHL Network and ESPN Classic. Redmond joined TSN in 2005 as senior marketing manager and over the past two years he has collaborated on co-branded campaigns with high-profile sports properties including the NHL, CFL, Hockey Canada, NFL and NBA. Prior to joining the sports broadcaster he spent four years as the sponsorship marketing manager at RBC Financial Group. His career began at Molson Canada where he spent four years working on sales and marketing programs. In addition to graduating from Saint Mary's University in Halifax with a bachelor of commerce, Redmond played semi-professional hockey in Europe and the US.

CAB staff appointments

The Canadian Association of Broadcasters has named Susan Tolusso director, communications, and Glenda Cardinal director, finance and administration. Tolusso joins the CAB from Playback/First Take and Playback International where she was most recently an editor. Cardinal brings more than 15 years of experience in financial and administrative management to the association. Her career includes time at the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, the United Way and Nortel.
The CAB has also confirmed Devon Jacobs in the position of senior director, government relations. Jacobs has been the CAB's director of government relations since August. Before that he was a government relations manager with a national association, following a decade on Parliament Hill as a senior advisor to current minister of human resources and social development Monte Solberg.
