Analysts disagree on extent of ICT slowdown

IDC Canada, Forrester Research, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) may disagree on the extent of the information and communication technology (ICT) slowdown, but all concur that hardware and semiconductors are getting hit hardest.

Quebec consumers group wants user policy for short codes

Quebec consumer advocacy group, Union des consommateurs, wants the country’s wireless service providers to adopt a user policy for short codes after receiving complaints from consumers about unwanted charges on their bills. The group is asking the CRTC to intervene.

S-VOX sells Christian channel

The Christian Channel has been sold to the World Impact Ministries (WIM), a St. Catherine’s, ON-based Christian charity. The sale was announced today by S-VOX group of companies, which owns the channel. It will be final pending approval from the CRTC. Mark Prasuhn, president of The Christian channel said WIM is "uniquely positioned to build on the success that has been achieved to date," adding he looks forward to facilitating a smooth transition. Upon approval from the CRTC, WIM will take charge of operations at the Channel, which was launched in 2005, and introduce a new flagship variety enterprise program called Encounter, which will air everyday on prime time.

Weather Network garners record number of visitors to website in Dec.’08

About 7 million unique visitors visited The Weather Network’s website in December setting a new record, according to a press statement from the network. The figures, published by Comscore, say this represents an increase of 48% over the last month and 25% during the same month in 2007. The figures also show the weathernetwork.com leading among 15 of Canada’s major sites, including the CBC, Canada.com, and Canoe, in terms of unique visitors for December 2008.

CRTC tells Bell and PWGSC to reach to DND contract arrangement

The CRTC warned both Bell Canada and Public Works Government Services Canada that if they don’t reach an agreement on the Department of National Defence‘s network impasse by January 27, it will impose one. Commission chair Konrad von Finckenstein made the statement in his closing remarks to the public hearing, held last week.

Obama inauguration maxes out ORION peering pipe

ORION’s peering links at the Toronto Internet Exchange (TORIX) reached maximum traffic levels of 2 Gbps on Tuesday, as thousands accessed live streams of the U.S. presidential inauguration. The traffic came from ORION-connected individuals and institutions accessing webcasts such as CBC’s online stream.

Contec not proceeding with private placement

As a result of the difficult equity financing markets, Contec Innovations Inc. won’t proceed with its second tranche of the non-brokered private placement, announced last November.
