CAB to officially unveil LPIF framework next week

The Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB) will officially unveil the Local Programming Improvement Fund (LPIF) on Monday, Feb. 23. Last fall, the CRTC mandated CAB to establish a framework for administering the $60 million fund by Jan. 17. But on Jan.9, CAB wrote to the CRTC saying it can’t beat the deadline and asked for it to be pushed back by a month until Feb. 17.

FCC announces acting chief, international bureau

John Giusti takes over this month as acting chief of the Federal Communication Commission’s International Bureau, replacing Helen Domenici. Giusti currently serves as deputy bureau chief of the International Bureau where he is responsible for its work with other regulators, foreign governments and international organizations, and for the management of issues related to the provision of international services to the American people.  He joined the FCC in 1994.

CEP calls on CRTC to revisit fee-for-carriage

Globalive Wireless names new VP

Stewart Thompson has been named VP of business development and carrier relations at Globalive Wireless. In his role, Thompson will be responsible for relationships with national and international service providers including developing roaming and mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) agreements and establishing interconnection for Globalive Wireless’ network with Canadian operators. CRTC seeks ways to ease cash burden on small TV broadcasters

The CRTC has issued a call for input to review licence renewals for conventional broadcasters in light of the current economic downturn which has been decimating ad revenues. The move could result in a new type of licence that would ease the financial burden on small television broadcasters who are currently bearing the brunt of the global credit crunch. The deadline for submission of comments is Feb. 23.
