Nortel partners with giant US cableco to expand SMB sales in North America

Nortel Networks is teaming up with Cox Communications as part of a new strategy that will see cablecos reselling Nortel products and services to their business customers.  The agreement, announced at the 2008 NCTA Cable Show, will establish Nortel’s first Small Business Center in North America, opening new channels to expand sales of the telecom equipment maker’s hybrid IP PBX products.

CIAIC Comment: CRTC’s new media initiative a vital opportunity to put Canada back on course

In 1998, the CRTC took a close look at the Internet in Canada and decided it did not merit their oversight at that time. Issuing a New Media Exemption Order in 1999, they did however, promise to revisit the issue in 2004. Now, nine years later instead of five, the CRTC has reopened the file and is reflecting on the current reality of the online world.

Family Channel to air movie online

Astral Media‘s Family Channel has announced it will air the Disney Channel original movie Camp Rock online at Family.ca on June 23, three days after the movie airs on television. The movie will also be available on Family OnDemand beginning June 17, completing the full multi-platform experience. "Camp Rock is going to kick off a huge summer for Family Channel viewers," said Joe Tedesco, VP and GM, Family Channel. "More and more kids are watching Family programs online, and we’re excited to include Camp Rock to our growing list of short and long-form programming on Family.ca and to round out our multi-platform offerings." Olympic consortium continues to grow

Dan Cimoroni and Nelson Millman have been named VP of business development and executive producer, respectively, of the CTV-Rogers Media Olympic consortium. Cimoroni, who is responsible for creating business opportunities for non-traditional media vehicles during the Vancouver 2010 and London 2012 Games, brings more than 20 years of experience in the management, sponsorship, marketing and sales arenas to the consortium. Most recently, he was VP, sports and management, at Insight Sports Ltd. He was also VP at IMG Golf for eight years. Millman will be responsible for the strategic development and implementation of pre-Olympic and Olympic cross-platform audio content for terrestrial radio, web and mobile for both the Vancouver and London Games. He has worked in radio for 35 years during which time he helped launch The Fan in 1992.

The Bell Fund is trying to help make new media pay

Over the course of the next year the Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund hopes to identify the best revenue-generating business opportunities for Canadian interactive content on a global scale. Launched in April, the Marketing and Business Development Initiative will look at 12 Bell Fund recipients from the past with plans to share the findings of the program industry wide.
