Minister of Industry Jim Prentice announced this week that he created an advisory committee on the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and named the members of the panel.

Industry names CSA advisory committee members

This week Industry Minister Jim Prentice named four members of the Canadian Space Agency’s (CSA) advisory committee. Cecil Hawkins, chair of the committee, holds a law degree from Dalhousie University. He was appointed CEO of Canadian Erectors Ltd. in 1982. The corporate group, Canerector, Inc., of which Mr. Hawkins is sole owner, has approximately 2,000 employees.

WebTech appoints board member

Peter Roberts, former president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia and former CFO of Sierra Wireless Inc. has been appointed to WebTech Wireless Inc.’s board of directors. Roberts has worked in public accounting in Canada, the US and the UK, and for the past 25 years he has worked at a number of public and private corporations in various executive financial roles.

Canwest exec takes over Global BC operations

Canwest Mediaworks has named Brett Manlove VP and GM of Global Television’s BC operations, CHBC and CHEK. Manlove began his broadcasting career almost 20 years ago when he joined BCTV/CHEK as an account executive. Since then he’s held a variety of senior sales and marketing positions with the network, including his most recent role as Canwest’s senior VP of sales and marketing Canada. He is also a board member and past president of the BC Association of Broadcasters, board member/treasurer of the Advertising Standards Council, and trustee of the Sports Hall of Fame and Museum.

Shaftesbury signs toy deal for Life with Derek

Toronto-based Shaftesbury Films has partnered with IToys for a  line of electronic hand-held and tabletop games based on the Shaftesbury live-action kids comedy series Life with Derek. The highly-rated series is translated into more than 14 languages and airs in more than 100 countries worldwide, including the US, France, the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, Latin America, Eastern Europe, South East Asia, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. "IToys has built a reputation for creating award-winning products for contemporary consumers and we felt they’d be an ideal partner for imaginative products that will uphold the integrity of the Life with Derek brand as it is integrated into new categories," said Shane Kinnear, VP of marketing and sales for Shaftesbury. The first line of products are scheduled to roll out during the first quarter of 2009.

Vancouver consultant named to television academy

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has elected Catherine Warren, president  of Vancouver-based FanTrust Entertainment Strategies, to its membership. Working in the US, the UK, Western Europe and Canada for more than two decades, Warren has published 25 books and magazine series for adults and children on science and computing as well as produced numerous award-winning Web sites and interactive broadcasts, including the Gemini Award-winning CTVNews.com. She has also been a board member of the Bell Broadcast & New Media Fund since 2000, is a board member of the United Way Lower Mainland, Canada, and has served as an international judge for the Interactive Emmy Awards.  "Canada is world-class when it comes to digital entertainment and so I am particularly honoured to be counted among the Academy’s Canadian members," said Warren in a release. The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is the largest organization of global broadcasters, with over 550 members from nearly 70 countries and over 400 companies.
