Guest-Tek announces more losses

Calgary based Guest-Tek Interactive Entertainment Ltd. posted a net loss of more than $388,000 in the second quarter, on revenue of $9.89 million. This is the company’s lowest loss since the same period in 2005.

Telesat posts second quarter profit

Telesat Canada posted a $12 million profit in the second quarter, crimping its overall losses for the year to $89 million. Revenue for the second quarter was $169 million, up slightly from the previous quarter’s earnings of $162 million.

CanWest unloads UK-based radio operations

Canwest Global Communications Corp. subsidiary, Canwest MediaWorks UK Limited, has sold its three underperforming ‘Original 106 fm’ radio operations in the UK. The sale of the three stations, located in Bristol, Aberdeen and the Solent region of England, will enable the company to improve its operating profits by approximately $7 million annually.

Guild urges feds to aid film industry as budget consultations begin

Top exec leaves CanWest post

After a four-year stint as president at CanWest Broadcasting, Kathy Dore will leave her current position after her contract expires in October. Dore was instrumental in rebranding Global Television and increasing its presence in the list of top shows in the country. She also oversaw the integration of Alliance Atlantis speciality channels into CanWest as well as managing a number of initiatives that enabled CanWest to exploit advertising opportunities through multiple platforms, including directing the transition to a digital environment.

Consolidation wave continues in Ontario utelco market

Government shutting down cultural podcasts site

The future of the federal government’s first directory of cultural podcasts—including a portal showcasing Canadian culture— is in jeopardy following a “strategic review” conducted after the delivery of the 2008 budget. Podcasts.culture.ca, together with its host, culture.ca, will be yanked off the Internet as early as this fall, according to Charles Drouin, a spokesman with the Department of Canadian Heritage.
