VoIP for SMBs got easier

Mediatrix Telecom Inc., a Montreal-based telecom equipment provider, announced that it has successfully completed interoperability testing with Cisco Systems Inc.'s Linksys division. Mediatrix' 4400 series gear is now compatible with the Linksys Voice System, and that creates "a true plug-and-play solution" for small- and medium-sized businesses IP telephony communications needs.

Cloakware to present at Mobile Security 2007

TiVo coming to Canada for holidays

TiVo Inc., the creator of the popular American digital video recorder, announced today that TiVo DVRs will be available in Canada in time for the holidays. "We've received overwhelming demand from Canadian consumers who want access to TiVo's innovative products and services and we are extremely excited to be able to deliver our highly-successful TiVo Series2 Dual Tuner DVR to this key strategic marketplace — just in time for the holidays," said Joshua Danovitz, VP and GM of international at TiVo, in a news release. "TiVo's move into Canada represents a natural, important progression for our business as we continue to make sustained progress across international markets." The TiVo Series2 DT DVR will be available in early December at major Canadian retailers including Best Buy, The Brick, London Drug and Future Shop for a suggested retail price of $199 plus standard TiVo subscription fees.

CTVgm partners with Canadian Centre for Diverstiy

The Canadian Centre for Diversity has named CTVglobemedia Inc. the exclusive national media sponsor of its 2007-2008 See Different fundraising campaign. The agreement provides the centre with a multiplatform awareness campaign leveraging CTVgm's television, radio and print properties.  As part of the partnership, CTVgm has produced a 30-second English-language television public service announcement, which will be aired across the broadcaster's national, local and specialty television properties, to generate for the centre's public education and fundraising efforts. "CTVglobemedia is proud to support the Canadian Centre for Diversity's innovative campaign, and we congratulate them on their excellent programs," said Sarah Crawford, VP of public affairs at CTVgm. "We're pleased to play a role in inspiring young people in Canada to stand up for diversity, equity and inclusion." CCTS still controlled by industry, despite changes: PIAC

Adding another consumer representative to the new telecommunications consumer protection agency hasn't satisfied its main critic. Public Interest Advocacy Centre lawyer John Lawford says the reactionary move by the Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services rings hollow because industry will continue to hold majority sway over the CCTS. The CCTS proposed the change to its board structure following its appearance before the CRTC's hearing into its structure and mandate.

Hydro One appoints president and CEO

Laura Formusa has been appointed president/CEO of Hydro One Inc., after serving for the past year in an acting position. Since joining the company in 1980, she has held various positions with the utility, including general counsel. Formusa earned her Bachelor of Law degree at Osgoode Hall Law School and was admitted to the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1980. Hydro One is a holding company that operates through its subsidiaries in electricity transmission and distribution and telecom businesses.

Rogers launches Super Channels in Ontario, N.B.

Rogers Cable Communications Inc. has launched the Super Channel package consisting of four standard-defintion Super Channel stations to its customers in Ontario and New Brunswick: Super Channel 1 provides series, movies, documentaries and music; Super Channel 2 with action, horror, sci-fi, anime, extreme sports and comedies is for viewers who tend to like alternative programming; Super Channel 3 is skewed to female audiences; and Super Channel 4 carries premium programming shot and produced in Canada. "Viewers have been requesting Super Channel and we are pleased Rogers is the first major cable operator to answer those requests," said Malcolm Knox, President and COO, Super Channel. "We look forward to putting our unique offering out to Canadians and enhancing their pay television viewing experience." The Super Channel package is available to Rogers PersonalTV customers for $15.99 a month.
